Why Taxes?

Ever wonder why a person would choose to be a tax specialist? It’s an interesting story actually. haha.

I graduated with a business management diploma in accounting in 2009. I clearly remember my first job in an accounting office, and how much I absolutely hated it. The work was fascinating, but the work environment was a shock. I went from seeing a hundred people a day working at Tim Hortons, to talking to no one all day. It was rough.

Tax work was like the best of both worlds. When I started back in 2015, most clients came in to the office to get their tax return done. It was so nice to chat, while also getting to learn about all different tax scenarios.

Over the years I’ve worked for CRA, a credit union, municipal government and a couple accounting offices. I learned a lot at each place and it all makes me better at what I do.

I didn’t really set out to be a tax specialist and it could just as easily have been any other financial career. I heavily considered becoming a mortgage broker actually. Getting approved for a mortgage and getting a great rate – mattered tremendously to me and my security. I researched it to death, and it paid off completely.

Basically, if it has to do with my bank account, I want to understand it. I don’t do taxes because I love tax. I do it because I love knowing how to save money on taxes and how to take advantage of other government programming. This isn’t unimportant stuff. Money matters.

I love getting to share my knowledge to help other people make the best of their situation too. Helping someone maximize their business expenses – saving them thousands a year – brings me joy. So does helping people sort out review letters, or getting caught up on past taxes. I remember helping a woman with a disability tax credit application and she ended up getting about $20k back from it. I can still see the relief and excitement on her face when she told me. I’ve cried with many clients too. Money isn’t just money. Taxes aren’t just taxes. It’s all tied up with life changes, family dynamics, pride, security, mental health – and so much more.

Taxes don’t need to be a stressful, weighty thing you manage alone. I’m here to help, and all you have to do is reach out!
